I just want to state up-front that I am more disturbed by Stefan’s actions on the bridge than I have been by anything Damon’s done TO Elena. But that’s my prerogative and probably my criteria specific to my personal beliefs. It’s not reflective or decisive for anyone else. If you think what Damon has done is worse, than so be it. That’s YOUR prerogative. I’m not here to counsel people about what they should and should not put up with as far as emotional torture goes because, quite frankly, if anyone in real life put up with any measure of the emotional torture doled out by Stefan or Damon, I would have them committed and do everything in my power to get them into therapy.
You play with a different set of playing cards when dealing with a vampire narrative, so whatever. People draw their own lines, and the TVD crew draws very few lines to begin with, and they’re all in sand.
BUT. I will say that while I would be REALLY grossed out if Elena started making out with Stefan again any time soon, I don’t think the bridge was a deal-breaker. I actually think it might have been a good thing for Stefan and Elena in the end.
HEAR ME OUT.
Elena has held Stefan up as this paragon of vampire virtue for 2.5 seasons now. She sees him as this shining example of what a vampire CAN and SHOULD be. And though he probably claims he tried to dissuade her of this notion, at every turn it was Damon is Bad, Stefan is Good, and Stefan did very little to not help frame the narrative in this manner. Granted, it was true on some level. But after a year of that, Elena can’t turn on a dime and accept that Stefan has evil in him.
I think she needed to have that cruelty turned on her so that should could finally break through the armor that goes along with the Knight in Shining Armor image she had of Stefan in her head. Because what kind of love is it if you don’t even accept and acknowledge who your partner truly is?
If anything, this could be the healthiest thing that’s ever happened to Stelena. Elena needed, needed to accept that Stefan has these capabilities, that he is fully able to destroy people. Am I glad he did it to Elena? No. But in the end, it could be a turning point for them. For everyone that thought their relationship was a house of cards, well. Now if anything comes out of them again, it’s certainly not from the standpoint of smoke and mirrors and sticking your head in the sand. Maybe that’s a good thing.
